The first edition of these "Etudes de Genre" by Napoléon Coste was published by Richault in Paris in 1873. Following his normal practice, Coste conceived the studies for a seven-string guitar. This instrument was extended in the bass region by the addition of a seventh string tuned usually to D but occasionally to C. In adapting these studies for a six-string guitar both the tuning down of the sixth string to D, which is customary today, as well as the octave transposition recommended by Coste himself have been taken into account.
