The Rapsodia para Piano y Cobla [Rhapsody for Piano and Cobla] (1953) is notable among the works by Manuel Oltra since it was his first work composed for this combination of instruments. His works for cobla, apart from harmonizations of some one hundred traditional Catalan dances, include more than a dozen concert works of varied lengths and instrumentations as well as an extensive catalogue of sardanas. As a composer, Manuel Oltra always attempts to create new and interesting combinations of sounds. He was the first composer to combine the cobla with other instruments not traditionally found in that formation, achieving new and interesting rhythmic and melodic combinations.
