We composers are inclined to consider the past as something that will never cease being present. I became acquainted with the works of Stefan Zweig since they formed part of my parent’s library. One of his books, The World of Yesterday was written during the final years of his life and concerns the memories of a European man facing the disintegration of his beloved continent. In 1931, the year of his 50th birthday, Zweig suffered a very special and sudden discomfort. He described the feeling of a rapid and mysterious chill that he considered as a terrible premonition.
In the last years of his life, Zweig suffered from constant anxiety that paralyzed him. Day after day and hour after hour his thoughts were focused on the destruction of the European continent.
He repeatedly said: «Europe has commited suicide». After years of being stateless he was exhausted and decided on a tragic ending to his life. He wrote to his friends that «I predict that you will be able to see the dawn at the end of this long night».
My music is a reflection of his situation in the same way as is the drama which so many people live today and, in addition, by the many images which through the years have been engraved in my mind.
The performance of this work can be preceded by a brief prelude that is included in this edition. We offer two versions: for piano or violin.
