The present edition includes most of the youthful pieces that make up the complete works for piano by Manuel Blancafort, whose genesis can be considered, in a way, parallel to the birth of the Manuel Blancafort Foundation. When the pianist Miquel Villalba became interested in the composer's work, his descendants facilitated access to the review of his manuscripts, which were in the process of being donated to the Biblioteca de Catalunya. His efforts in the recovery of unpublished scores have made it possible for this second complete work to be almost twice the size of the first, produced by Antoni Besses for the Mandala label in 1997. The scope of the project initiated by Villalba and the need to maintain the task of recovering, conserving and disseminating the composer's legacy led his descendants to create the Foundation in 2003.

Manuel Blancafort Foundation

Preface
This volume of piano pieces is a collection of works written between 1915 and 1921. Arranged chronologically, these piano miniatures clearly exemplify Manuel Blancafort's early style, dominated by the short piece, either isolated or forming a cycle, and by the romantic attitude of a young composer who, in search of a personal language, set his poetic impressions to music through a taste for introversion, memory, nature and popular themes.

The language used is tonal, concise in form, and the harmonic and structural framework shows a preference for minor keys and the Lied form. The main characteristics of the composer's music are already reflected in it: the thematic clarity, with deep Catalan roots, and the logical development of a musical discourse framed by the perfect balance between form and expressiveness.

Comments on the edition
Some of the holograph manuscripts in this collection appear to be simple sketches or provisional notes. However, for their musical transcription, the original handwriting has been respected, both in terms of spelling and performance indications. Only those clarifications have been added in square brackets that have been considered appropriate for a better understanding of the work.

The untitled pieces, which are absent in the manuscript, are numbered according to the cataloguing carried out by the Biblioteca de Catalunya, where the Manuel Blancafort Collection is deposited.
