Composer  Juli Garreta y Arboix (1875 - 1925) was born in Sant Feliu de Guíxols. He studied with his father and in the Ramon Novi School in his native city.  He played violin and piano.   His catalogue includes orchestral works, chamber music, piano works, vocal music and numerous sardanas.

The composition Mar Plana, written in 1901, is subtitled «Record de la Conca» [Remembering Shell Beach], a reference to the so-called “Shell Beach”  in S’Agaró on the Costa Brava.  It was premiered by cellist Bonaventura Dini (to who the work is dedicated), accompanied by Enrique Granados at the piano, on May 18, 1901 at the Teatro Novetats in Sant Feliu de Guíxols.  This composition is listed in the Catalogue of the Works of Juli Garreta prepared by Joan Gay i Puigbert, Joaquim Rabaseda and Matas and Marisa Ruiz i Magaldiin in 2014 with the support of the Town Hall of Sant Feliu de Guíxols.

For the present edition three sources have been used:
A- The autograph manuscript which first belonged to Bonaventura Dini, and later passed to cellist Ricard Boadella and later still to Josep Bassal.
B- A copyist manuscript which is in the Archive of the Orfeó Català.
C- A photocopy of a manuscript copied by the cellist Sants Sagrera.

In this edition we have basically used Source C with some corrections of notes that are found in Sources A and B.

In measure 110 of the piano part we have followed the autograph manuscript and in measure 65 of the cello part we have also used the autograph manuscript, which coincides with Source B, since Source C is incomplete.

In the music for cello part found in the piano score the slurs and dynamics are identical to those in the autograph manuscript.  However in the cello score the slurs and dynamics are those found in Sources B and C, with other additions by Josep Bassal.
