Since my childhood I have always been very attracted by kites. While living in Asia, I could enjoy their delicate, graceful flying which suggested me many musical pictures. I keep beautiful memories of an evening at Tiananmen, Beijing’s hugest square, with the sky covered by kites, all of them dancing a dance full of magic, as a counterpoint to a fascinating dusk. Therefore, when my friend, the outstanding guitarist Josep Henríquez -who has played my music all over the world-, commissioned to me a composition for the Eurasia guitar duo, formed by himself and the skilled Vietnamese performer Hang Nguyen, I thought that an Asian evocation would fit very well. Thus, I used sketches of my usual minimalist style, trying to draw the flight of the kites to finally run into a delightful Chinese folk song: «Variegated Clouds Chasing the Moon». KITES was composed in Singapore, in February 2004. It is dedicated to Josep Henríquez and Hang Nguyen, who premiered it during along South East Asia Tour, at the end of that year.
