This edition is an adaptation for voice and piano, made by this author, of the traditional Catalan songs that Blancafort harmonized for piano solo in 1919 which were published by Editorial Boileau. The current version, made at the request of the Manuel Blancafort Foundation, follows the composer’s original idea, however, the distribution of the material between the voice and piano has been altered to establish a dialogue.
Given the popular nature of these songs, the texts vary in different versions. In this case the following choice was made: El mal ric, Rossinyol que vas a França y Senyora Isabel follow the version published in 1992 by EUMO in Llibre de cançons - Crestomatia de cançons tradicionals catalanes, an edition prepared by Joaquim Maideu i Puig; La filla del Carmesí uses a text by Josep Carner (1904) and Muntanyes regalades uses the version by Teresa Verdaguer y Juvanteny (born 1925). That version was transmitted to her by her mother, with the exception of the final strophe. Since the complete texts of the first three songs are too extensive to include in this publication and we have transcribed a selection made by the mezzo soprano Anna Alàs i Jové.
