In my more than twenty years of teaching experience I have come to realize that there’s a lack of contemporary repertoire that is actually accessible to beginner students. Most of the contemporary literature for piano is not intended for students but for professional performers, and the technical difficulties are just too challenging for most students.

Because of this, most of the students are not exposed to more “modern” sounds until the sixth or seventh year of their piano experience, having only played maybe some Bartok or Stravinsky pieces, but nothing written in the last 50 years.

Having grown accustomed to more traditional sounds, their first reaction to contemporary music is that of repulse or at least discomfort. Believing that concert music should be enjoyed by everyone and not only by an intellectual elite, I decided to create a series of pieces in which several modern techniques of piano writing are featured while maintaining a relatively easy difficulty. The pieces were originally conceived for my own students at Community Music Center of Boston and each of the numbers focuses on a different element.

Sometimes it’s a non-traditional harmonic language or the use of dissonances, others is the utilization of extended techniques such as tapping on the fallboard, plucking the strings or hitting them with mallets.

The series are called A Dinosaur in my Piano, bringing a kidfriendly element into the mix. I can attest all my students loved the idea, and it makes things a lot easier when instead of having the students practice a modern piece, they get to play the “dinosaur” piece.
